HAMDEN – The boyfriend of the pregnant caregiver of a Hamden resident will spend the new year in jail after he was charged with assaulting his girlfriend.
The incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Hamden Police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith, when police responded to a Smith Drive home on the report of an assault.
“[The] investigation revealed that a 31 year-old female, who is a “live-in caregiver” at the Smith Drive address, was involved in a verbal dispute with her boyfriend, Victor Pergee,” Smith said in a release.
“The dispute escalated into a physical altercation. Pergee struck the victim, who is pregnant, multiple times, knocking her to the ground. He then ripped her hair out,” Smith said.
Pergee also is accused of assaulting and choking the woman for an hour, Smith said. She was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for injuries to her stomach and arms, he said.
Pergee, 34, was charged with first-degree assault on a pregnant woman, second-degree strangulation, disorderly conduct and interfering with a police officer.
He was held in lieu of $100,000 bond and was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court the same day. He has not posted bond, according to the state Judicial Website.
Officer Nicholas D’Angelo conducted the investigation, Smith said.
