HAMDEN – One of several new stores coming to the Hamden Mart opened last week.

Mayor Curt Balzano Leng officially cut the ribbon on the new Burlington Store Friday morning.

“I am very pleased to welcome Burlington Stores to the Hamden Mart,” Leng said. “Hamden is making big strides in the development of our commercial sectors, and the addition of Burlington Stores is just one more example of real progress we’ve made.

“The town and our residents will mutually enjoy our new relationship with Burlington Stores, and I personally look forward to the many positive benefits their presence will bring to Hamden,” he said.

Burlington Stores opened in the former location of Bon Ton stores, which closed last year. Burlington took a large portion of the space that Bon Ton left. Announcements of other tenants will be made once the remaining space is committed, according to Hamden Director of Economic Development and Neighborhood Revitalization Dale Kroop.

Burlington Coat Factory, now known as Burlington Stores, is an American national off price department store retailer, and a division of Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation with 591 stores in 45 states.  It offers up to 65 percent off other retailers’ prices on baby gear, coats, clothes for the family, home decor, and more.

The new store employs 75 people, according to a release by the company, and is 47,738 square feet.

“We are thrilled to open a new Burlington in the Hamden community, bringing even more jobs to the neighborhood and providing local residents with a valued shopping experience,” says Tom Kingsbury, Burlington president, CEO and chairman.

Town Economic Development officials also were pleased with the grand opening.

“Burlington taking the Bon Ton space shows the continued strength of retail,” Kroop said. “Most of the time our major retail centers run at over 90 percent occupancy.  When someone leaves, there is always interest.

“Burlington will create retail jobs and another great opportunity for Hamden residents to shop,” Kroop said.

It’s among several stores expected to open shortly. Zzaam Korean BBQ will open in the location of the former Muscle Maker, and next year Aldi Supermarkets will open in the space formerly occupied by Toys ‘R Us.
