Hamden man charged with assaulting and robbing ex-girlfriend

HAMDEN – A Hamden man is facing domestic violence and robbery charges after police say he beat his ex-girlfriend Sunday morning.
Police received a report of an assault at a Kaye Vue Drive home at about 8:30 Sunday morning, according to Hamden Police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.
“Upon arrival officers met with the 23-year-old victim. She stated that her ex-boyfriend, Taray Smart, repeatedly punched her in the face and head,” Smith said in a release Tuesday.
“When she fell to the ground, Smart continued to beat her. He then stole her cell phone, before leaving her residence,” Smith said. “Moments later, Officer Andrew Pfeiffer located Smart in a nearby parking lot. Smart subsequently fled on foot into a wooded area. Officer Pfeiffer quickly located Smart and placed him under arrest.”
The woman had injuries to the “entire right side of her face,” Smith said.
Smart, 35, of 95 Kay Vue Drive, Apartment 2M, Hamden, was charged with third-degree assault, third-degree robbery, second-degree breach of peace and interfering with a police officer. He was held in lieu of $5,000 bond and was arraigned Monday in Meriden Superior Court.
Officer Kyle Sampognaro conducted the investigation, Smith said.
